Homage to an Homage

Interlocking arcs and rounded bands of saturated color overlap within a square field, framed by a matte black ground that compresses the composition into a dense, layered structure.

About the work

Within a black square boundary, broad looping bands and nested ovoids press against one another, creating a dense network of overlapping forms that alternately advance and recede. Cadmium red, chrome yellow, ultramarine blue, emerald green, burnt orange, and ivory are organized in contiguous blocks, so that each curve cuts into or caps another, generating a measured rhythm of contrast and repetition. The eye moves along these rounded paths, tracing sequences of color that shift from warm to cool as they bend, while occasional rectilinear segments interrupt the arcs and anchor them in place. Negative spaces are minimal, often reduced to slim intervals of black or dark blue, which sharpen the edges and heighten the sense of compression. The title’s allusion to homage is echoed visually in the way certain shapes and color pairings seem to restate and echo each other across the surface, as if one configuration were continually restaged and rephrased within the same confined plane.
