Gyrification

Interlocking, cell-like fields of saturated color fill a nearly square plane, their rounded contours separated by thin pale bands and overlaid with fine concentric and linear patterns that guide the eye across the surface.

About the work

Large, rounded compartments of color press against one another in an irregular grid, their edges defined by narrow ivory channels that read as seams or boundaries. Within each compartment, closely spaced concentric arcs and parallel lines curve, bend, and ripple, setting up an internal rhythm that contrasts with the smoother outer silhouettes. Deep blues and blacks accumulate toward several corners, counterbalanced by expanses of turquoise, orange, and yellow that pool toward the center and lower edge, creating a subtle circulation of weight and temperature across the composition. The layered, ring-like markings evoke a slow accretion of time, while the clustered lobes and furrowed surfaces quietly echo the folded, labyrinthine associations suggested by the title “Gyrification.”
