Cold Comfort #2
Interlocking vertical chains of translucent, bulb-like forms in warm yellows and reds gradually shift toward cooler blues and greens against a pale ground, creating a gridded field of overlapping color and line.
About the work
The composition is organized as a loose vertical grid of ovoid and drop-shaped forms that expand and contract along slender axes, their membranes defined by fine, hairline contours that accumulate into denser edges. Warm cadmium yellows and vermillion reds occupy the central band, flanked by teal, ultramarine, and forest green shapes that seem to recede slightly, creating a gentle oscillation between advance and withdrawal within the picture plane. Areas of overlap yield secondary hues and soft gradients, while small, dark nodal points punctuate the intersections, stabilizing the otherwise fluid silhouettes. The pale, nearly unmarked ground heightens the sense of suspended, vessel-like volumes, and the progression from warm to cool tones introduces a subtle temperature shift that resonates with the work’s title, suggesting a calibrated balance between concentration and restraint.
