Cellular Automata

Vertical bands of interlocking, cell-like ovals and circles in red, orange, yellow, blue, green, and cream stretch across the square surface in an undulating, rhythmic sequence.

About the work

The composition is organized into a series of parallel vertical bands, each populated by linked ovals and concentric circles that expand and contract as they move from top to bottom, creating a pulse-like rhythm across the square format. Cream and pale blue grounds support sequences of crimson, cadmium orange, deep violet, and viridian forms, whose darker cores and lighter perimeters establish a layered sense of depth within otherwise flat zones of color. Fine linear contours trace each shape, generating a secondary network of boundaries that suggests subdivision, overlap, and adjacency, while small specks and subtle tonal shifts accumulate in certain bands, concentrating visual density. The work stages a measured interplay between repetition and variation, as similar rounded units mutate from band to band, echoing the title’s reference to rule-based, incremental transformation within a constrained field.
