The Strange Efficacy

A dozen stalked forms stand in loose ranks across a square, off-white ground, each rising from densely stippled tissue into a crown of concentric rings. The palette moves from deep teal and indigo at the left, through ochre, cadmium yellow and vermilion at the centre, to a bruised violet at the right, with smaller discs of olive, rose and cobalt held between them at lower heights. Every surface is worked in fine dotted and linear marks — cellular, granular, closer to a specimen plate than to a painting of plants — so that the eye reads tissue before it reads shape. The radiating discs work as both apertures and cross-sections: some open onto a dark pupil, others onto a dense seed head, their rings compressing and expanding as though recording growth at different rates. The composition resists symmetry and hierarchy alike. The forms crowd toward the upper edge without touching, and the negative space between them is inscribed as densely as the forms themselves, binding the whole field into a single vibrating surface.
