Cold Comfort #3

An arrangement of translucent, vertically aligned circular forms in warm reds and yellows shifting to cool greens and blues is interlaced by fine, web-like lines against an off-white ground within a pale beige border.

About the work

The composition is organized as a loose grid of vertical columns, each composed of stacked circular units whose edges taper into narrow stems, creating a chain-like rhythm from top to bottom. Semi-transparent layers of brick red and amber on the left transition through goldenrod and pale celadon toward teal and cerulean blue on the right, establishing a gradual temperature shift that echoes the work’s title. Fine, filament-like lines stretch between the circles, forming delicate membranes that thicken and thin as they cross, generating a sense of shallow depth and soft overlap. Negative spaces, rendered as pale ovals, punctuate the matrix and prevent the color bands from solidifying into strict stripes, while the consistent off-white ground and surrounding beige field stabilize the image, holding the fluctuating forms in a calm, suspended equilibrium.
