Nervous Excitability

Nervous Excitability borrows a nineteenth-century clinical phrase and applies it to a picture that will not sit still. Columnar forms of stretched ovals and rounded cells swell and constrict as they rise through the frame, pooling crimson, ultramarine, teal, amber, and violet at their centres, where nested rings and faint haloes let one hue bleed into another. Between the columns an ivory field opens, stitched into an irregular mesh by dark, filament-like lines. The rhythm is ordered and unstable at once — a charged structure in temporary balance.
